Apple & Berry Crumble

Mmm I love apple crumble… it is one of my favourite desserts.

This recipe I have changed alot to  make it even more delicious, and also healthier. Which certainly makes you feel less guilty about eating it…

What you need…

  • 4 large cooking apples
  • 2 cups of mixed berries, either fresh or frozen (which will need to be defrosted)
  • 1 cup of rolled oats
  • 1 1/2 cups wholemeal flour
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup butter, cut into small cubes
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup white sugar

What you do…

  1. Pre-heat oven to 175C
  2. Peel, core and slice apples… Then place apple pieces and berries into a pie dish
  3. In a separate bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and cinnamon.
  4. Gradually rub in the cubes of butter (using your fingers) to form a crumbly mixture
  5. Cover fruit with white sugar
  6. Then cover with the crumble mixture… make sure you cover the fruit completely so that it doesnt burn
  7. Cook in oven for 35-45minutes (depending on your oven)… one way I can tell that it is cook is that the juice from the berries begins to bubble at the sides.

I usually serve this crumble hot with ice-cream as i like the contrast between warm and cold… however my family prefers it with thickened cream.
